Vehicle Registrations
You must register and insure any vehicle that is being operated on public property in Alberta. If you have purchased a vehicle that has previously been registered in Alberta, you must register it under your name. Here are some of the Vehicle Registration services we offer at Rangeland Agencies.
Registering New or Used Motor Vehicles including Motorcycles and Off-Road Vehicles
What you need to register a vehicle under your name if you just bought a vehicle:
- New Vehicle Information Sheet (NVIS); only required if it’s a new vehicle
- Bill of Sale or Lease Agreement (if more than one person is listed on the Bill of Sale, both people must be present at time of registration or an Authorization Form must be completed by the person who won’t be present)
- Valid Insurance Pink Slip for the vehicle in your name(s)
- Valid Driver’s Licence(s)
Please note that according to Alberta Law the registered owner must be listed on the insurance pink slip.
Persons under the age of 18 require parental consent to register a vehicle in their name for the first time and the parent must be present in the office at the time of registering.
Registering New or Used Trailers
What you need to register a trailer under your name if you just bought a trailer:
- New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS) or Statement of Origin; only required if it’s a new trailer
- Bill of Sale
Please note the following: trailer plates are continuous — you only have to pay to register a trailer and plate once — and you do not need proof of insurance to register a trailer. However, you must inform your insurance company that you have purchased a trailer to add it to your insurance policy.
Registration Renewals
The Government of Alberta requires you to renew your licence plate and registration annually.
What you need to renew your registration:
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- Valid Insurance Pink Slip for the vehicle in your name(s)
If a vehicle is registered in two names and has been expired for twelve months or more, both registered owners must be present at the office with their Valid Driver’s Licences or the one who is attending must have a signed Authorization Form from the owner who is not attending.
Change of Address for Vehicle Registrations
Albertans must update addresses on both their driver’s licence and vehicle registration within 14 days of moving. Update both your driver’s licence and your registration at Rangeland Agencies at the same time to avoid a fine from law enforcement.
Cancelling Your Vehicle Registration
You can cancel your registration in person or via email or fax if you are no longer living in Alberta. The prorated unused portion of the original registration fee will be refunded by the government by mail minus a $10 government processing fee and you will be required to pay a registry service fee. You can keep your plates to use later.
What you need to cancel your registration in person:
- Valid identification to prove you’re on the vehicle registration
- Registration Card
What you need to cancel your registration via email or fax:
- A copy of your Valid Identification
- A fully completed Registration Cancellation or Licence Plate Declaration Form
- Money order or credit card info to cover the service fee
Plate Exchange
If your old plate is worn out, you can exchange it for a new one. The owner of the vehicle must be present or whoever is attending must have a signed Authorization Form.
What you need to exchange your plate:
- Valid Driver’s Licence
Replacing Lost or Stolen Plates
If you suspect your plate was stolen, you must contact your closest police station to create a case report. This protects you from issues that can arise with the plate out of your possession. If the plate was lost, you do not need a case report from the police station.
What you need to replace a lost or stolen plate:
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- Valid Insurance Pink Slip for the vehicle in your name(s)
- Police Case Report (if you suspect the plate was stolen)
