Out-of-Province and Out-of-Country Registration
New or Used Out of Province Vehicles
If you are bringing a vehicle into Alberta that was last registered in another province, you have 90 days to get your vehicle validated in Alberta with an Out of Province Inspection, with some exemptions.
If your vehicle is not exempt, you must go to Rangeland Agencies with Proof of Ownership (Registration from the previous province or Bill of Sale) and receive a request form for an inspection. Once the vehicle passes inspection, you will receive a form from the mechanic that is valid for 14 days. Then you can return to Rangeland Agencies to register the vehicle with the following documents:
- Out of Province Inspection Form from a mechanic (valid for 14 days after inspection)
- Proof of Ownership (Registration from the previous province or Bill of Sale)
- Valid Insurance Pink Slip for the vehicle in your name(s)
- Valid Driver’s Licence
Alberta Transportation, at their discretion, will allow for some exemptions to avoid Out of Province Inspections for some vehicles including:
- Brand new vehicles purchased in the last 90 days anywhere in Canada
- Used vehicles from British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba within the last four model years
- Used vehicles from British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba with government inspections completed in those provinces in the last 90 days
If your vehicle falls under one of those categories, then you must bring the following to Rangeland Agencies:
- New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS); only required if the vehicle is new
- Valid Insurance Pink Slip for the vehicle in your name(s)
- Previous Province Registration Document
- Bill of Sale (if more than one person is listed on the Bill of Sale, both people must be present at time of registration or an Authorization Form must be completed by the person who won’t be present)
- The vehicle itself, so an agent can inspect the VIN and read the odometer
- Valid Driver’s Licence
The Rangeland Agencies agent will process the paperwork and will inform you when Alberta Transportation makes a final decision on the exemption.
New or Used Out of Country Vehicles
Vehicles being imported from out of country must be approved by the Federal Government and then the Provincial Government. The first thing you must do is visit the Registrar of Imported Vehicles and follow the federal guidelines.
All vehicles must pass an Out of Province Inspection (with one exemption). If your vehicle is not exempt, you must go to Rangeland Agencies to obtain a request for an Out of Province Inspection. You must bring a Proof of Ownership (title from the home country or Bill of Sale), Form 1, Valid Driver’s Licence and an Export Certificate (if the vehicle is from Japan) to Rangeland Agencies to receive the request. You then bring that request to a mechanic. Once the vehicle passes inspection, you will receive a form from the mechanic that will be valid for 14 days.
You can then return to Rangeland Agencies to register the vehicle with the following documents:
- Out of Province Inspection Form from a mechanic (valid for 14 days after inspection)
- Proof of Ownership (title from the home country or Bill of Sale)
- Form 1, stamped twice
- Valid Insurance Pink Slip for the vehicle in your name(s)
- Valid Driver’s Licence
Alberta Transportation, at their discretion, allows for brand new vehicle purchases in the United State of America to be exempt from an Out of Province Inspection.
What you need to bring to Rangeland Agencies to qualify for the exemption:
- Bill of Sale dated within 90 days with the same name as the person who is registered it in Alberta
- Form 1, in the name of the person registering it in Alberta, stamped twice
- Original Statement of Origin or New Vehicle Information Statement
- The vehicle, so an agent can verify the VIN and read the odometer
- Valid Driver’s Licence
The Rangeland Agencies agent will process the paperwork and will inform you when Alberta Transportation makes a final decision on the exemption.
