Alberta Transportation provides a large amount of information on driving rules, regulations and tips for safe motor vehicle safety in the province of Alberta. Download Driver’s Guides for all motor vehicle classes which will provide all of the information necessary to be able to complete your written exam for your class 7 learners permit. Refer to the documents and guides available to you at the Alberta Transportation web site.

Prepare thoroughly for your Road Test, know your vehicle and review your Driver guide before your road test. Alberta Transportation has prepared a detailed guide (Preparing for your Road Test) to assist you with preparing for your Road Test.

Ensure that you have met all of the requirements for your Road Test.

CLASS 1

  • Permits the operation of a tractor/trailer combination with three or more axles, where the trailer is equipped with a full air brake system
  • Permits the operator to drive any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles, other than a motorcycle
  • Must hold a Class 5 (non-GDL) Licence
  • Must pass a Class 1 Knowledge test.
  • Must have Medical Examination for Motor Vehicle Operators form filled out by a physician
  • Must have completed and passed an approved Alberta air brake course through an authorized agency.

CLASS 2

  • Permits the operation of a bus with seating capacity exceeding 24 (excluding the driver), any vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 3, 4 or 5 operator’s licence operate
  • Must hold a Class 5 (non-GDL) Licence
  • Must pass a Class 2 Knowledge test.
  • Must have Medical Examination for Motor Vehicle Operators form filled out by a physician

CLASS 3

  • Permits the operation of a single motor vehicle with three or more axles, any vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence operate, Class 2 or 4 type vehicles without passengers
  • Must hold a Class 5 Full (non-GDL) Licence
  • Must pass a Class 3 Knowledge test.
  • Must have completed and passed an approved Alberta air brake course through an authorized agency if the vehicle has an air-only braking system or a combination of air and hydraulic braking system.

CLASS 4

  • Permits the operation of an ambulance, taxi, a bus that has a seating capacity of not more than 24 (excluding the operator), any vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence operate
  • Must hold a Class 5 Full (non-GDL) Licence
  • Must pass a Class 4 Knowledge test.
  • Must have Medical Examination for Motor Vehicle Operators form filled out by a physician

CLASS 5 ADVANCED

  • Stage 3 of the Graduated Driver Licensing Program
  • Full Alberta Licence with conditions
  • Permits the operation of any two axle single motor vehicle (car or truck)
  • Must be minimum licensing age of 18 years\
  • Must hold a Class (5) GDL for 2 years with the last 12 months suspension free.
  • New Albertans (click-new Albertan conditions)

CLASS 5 BASIC

  • Stage 2 of the Graduated Driver Licensing Program
  • Permits the operation of any two axle single motor vehicle (car or truck)
  • Must be minimum licensing age of 16 years.
  • Must hold Learner Class 7 (GDL) Licence with the last 12 months suspension free.
  • Probationary Licence for a minimum of two years with conditions

CLASS 6

  • Permits the operation of a motorcycle
  • Must be minimum licensing age of 16 years.
  • Must hold Learner Class 7 (GDL) Licence at least 12 months suspension free.
  • Must pass a Class 6 Knowledge test.
